Making the right decision
Choosing senior housing, whether for yourself or a loved one, can be overwhelming. The first step is to assess how much help is needed daily, which will narrow down the options. After selecting the right housing, compare costs, location, and amenities.
Aging In Place
Aging in place means living in your own home or with family. Most seniors prefer this option.
If you're relatively independent, aging in place may be ideal for maintaining your independence.
In-home caregivers, cleaning services, Meals on Wheels, and home modifications (like bathtub railings, wheelchair ramps, or emergency call systems) can help with daily activities.
Aging in place can be the most cost-effective option, but don’t forget regular costs like rent, utilities, taxes, and groceries.
Active Adult Communities/Housing
Active adult housing is designed for people 55+ or similar. It’s ideal for those wanting to downsize or reinvest equity in their home.
These are not traditional retirement homes. Instead, they offer single-floor living in condos or villas, with features like wide doorways and minimal maintenance for easier aging.
Residents enjoy activities like exercise, golf, shuffleboard, and social events with peers.
Costs vary depending on location and amenities offered.
Independent Living
Independent living is for seniors who can manage daily activities with minimal support.
While residents typically care for themselves, services like meals, laundry, and planned activities are available.
For seniors needing more assistance, options like assisted living or nursing homes might be better suited.
Monthly rates range from $1,500 to $6,000, with additional fees for extra services like meals or housekeeping.
Assisted Living/Memory Care
Assisted living provides limited care for seniors who need help with daily activities or those with memory issues.
Services include 24-hour staff, meals, medication management, housekeeping, and transportation.
Memory care facilities offer specialized care for dementia patients in a secure environment with appropriate activities.
Monthly rates typically range from $2,500 to $9,000, depending on the level of care and the facility’s amenities.
Nursing Home/Skilled Nursing Facility
Nursing homes provide 24-hour care for seniors with severe physical or mental health needs.
These facilities offer meals, health management, and activities under the supervision of licensed medical professionals.
Many nursing homes also offer specialized Alzheimer’s care, with facilities designed for dementia patients.
Costs vary widely depending on the level of care and the living space.
When selecting senior housing, it’s more effective to work with a certified Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES). These professionals are trained to guide you through the complex process and help you make the best decision based on your or your loved one’s needs.
