When Thai cuisine is premade, everything tends to taste similar across restaurants; when it’s authentic like this, you notice distinct layers in every bite.”

For our second column in Old Naples News, we couldn’t help but smile at our setting: we’re writing this from a lanai overlooking Fifth Avenue South in Naples, watching the parade of people enjoying our city and hearing clinking glasses drift through the air. After decades in Naples real estate, we’ve learned that the best conversations and the best meals, often happen just outside the spotlight. Lately, many of those meals have come from one place we keep returning to: Em-On’s Thai Café.

Before we met, our dining habits couldn’t have been more different - Elle was exploring every Asian menu she could find, while Mitch was in what can only be described as a committed relationship with wild-caught blackened salmon, seeing it four to five nights a week. Fortunately, both paths led us to the same conclusion: great food is always worth chasing.

Between showings, closings, and client calls, and when season is in full swing, we’ve made a ritual of ordering from Em-On’s and enjoying it on the lanai for dinner and a show of Fifth Avenue’s nightlife. If you’re downtown and craving it, hop onto DoorDash. Yes, it can take a little extra time to arrive, but that anticipation becomes part of the experience. Every time, it’s worth the wait.

As self-proclaimed culinary enthusiasts (strictly professional research, of course), we’re always chasing authenticity. That’s what makes Em-On’s stand out. Every detail is thoughtfully considered - especially the spice. You choose your heat level from one to five and be advised - they don’t tone it down for the American palate. Level four is not a suggestion - it’s a lifestyle choice.

We’ve long believed you can judge a Thai kitchen by its soups, and here they shine. The tom kha balances coconut milk and lime with mushrooms, herbs, and cilantro into a bowl that feels both fiery and soothing. The tom yum is aromatic, layered with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, and vegetables that showcase the depth Thai cuisine is known for. Ordering both isn’t indulgent; it’s strategy.

Em’s curries are equally memorable. Mitch’s favorite and the best he’s ever had is the panang, which carries a rich, slightly sweet warmth. The massaman leans deep and complex, the gang dang (red curry) delivers a classic Thai kick, and the gang kiew wan (green curry) brings bright herbal vibrancy. Then there’s the jungle curry - rustic, coconut-free, and intense. When Thai cuisine is premade, everything tends to taste similar across restaurants; when it’s authentic like this, you notice distinct layers in every bite. Insider tip: try the Thai donuts!

While we love patronizing the wonderful, culturally diverse restaurants throughout our community, we’ve learned we can enjoy their cuisine just as much from the lanai or dining room of our own home - and places like Em-On’s prove it. They remind us why we love both real estate and dining: the magic is often just beyond the obvious. Sometimes the best discoveries aren’t on the main avenue - they’re the ones you share with clients, friends, and anyone lucky enough to join you at the table. And if they happen to like spice level four…we know they’re our kind of people.

Until our  next table,

Elle & Mitch
