NCH Expands Cardiovascular Care with STEMI Center at North Hospital

Ilia Echevarria, PhD, MS, RN, CCRN-K, NEA-BC, CENP, CHES, Chief Nursing Officer NCH North Naples Hospital; Paul Hiltz, FACHE, NCH President and CEO; Steven Deutsch, MD, Interventional Cardiologist, NCH Rooney Heart Institute; Robert J. Cubeddu, MD, The Brynne and Bob Coletti Endowed Chair for the President of the NCH Rooney Heart Institute; Anthony Maro, Captain, Collier County Medical Services; Mags Palma, Vice President Clinical Services.

NCH is proud to announce the opening of the STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction) center at NCH North Hospital, further enhancing the region’s access to advanced cardiovascular care. The STEMI center at NCH North is the second such specialized center at NCH, with the first one being located at the NCH Baker Hospital downtown. STEMI is a critical type of heart attack that occurs when a coronary artery is completely blocked, requiring immediate medical attention.

Working in conjunction with Collier EMS, NCH has reduced the “door to balloon” time to just 28 minutes at the Baker location, which represents the time it takes the patient to receive the artery-opening balloon procedure from the moment they enter the Emergency Department. This is well below national standards of 90 minutes and places NCH in the 99th percentile in the performance of STEMI procedures.

The expansion of NCH’s STEMI center to NCH North Hospital is a strategic move to better serve the community by providing timely and specialized care for patients experiencing this life-threatening condition who reside in northern Collier and southern Lee Counties.

The new center at NCH North Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge technology, and a highly skilled dedicated STEMI team of healthcare professionals dedicated to delivering rapid and effective interventions for STEMI patients. This expansion reinforces NCH’s commitment to elevating the standard of cardiac care in Naples and surrounding areas.

“The NCH Rooney Heart Institute is on a transformational journey to become one of America’s top cardiovascular institutes. This day represents yet another major landmark in our path and commitment to expand and adhere to our core goals and mission,” said Dr. Robert Cubeddu, President of the NCH Rooney Heart Institute. “The opening of our second STEMI receiving center at our NCH North Hospital campus will assure Naples residents and surrounding communities, access to the highest quality standards of care. This important milestone will undoubtedly improve the lives and outcome of those at risk and inflicted by a major cardiovascular event.”

“This expansion reinforces NCH’s dedication to providing immediate, life-saving interventions for cardiac emergencies,” said Paul Hiltz, NCH President and CEO. “It ensures our community receives world-class cardiovascular care when minutes matter most.”
